From Sin to Sonship: The Real Path to Freedom

By Chaz M. Evanson, Unaffiliated Candidate for Governor of Colorado

Deliverance Can’t Replace Discipline. In today’s world, people are desperate for quick fixes, even in matters of the soul. We ask God to free us from every burden, remove every temptation, and cast out every hindrance. And while God is mighty to save and does work miraculously, there’s a hard truth we must embrace: not everything is a demon to cast out. Some things are simply the flesh that must be crucified. Deliverance won’t fix what obedience is meant to kill. God will not do for us what He has already commanded us to do.

Obedience Is the Gateway to Freedom. Jesus made it clear in Luke 9:23: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” That is the call to every believer. This isn’t about religious ritual, it’s about daily surrender. We are not called to manage our sin; we are called to kill it. We are not called to justify our pride; we are called to lay it down. Obedience isn’t bondage, it’s the path to freedom. And it is the foundation of self-governance.

The Founders Understood This Principle. The Founding Fathers knew that only a virtuous and morally obedient people could govern themselves. John Adams wrote, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” The Bible wasn’t just a private devotion for many of our founders; it was the blueprint for liberty. They understood that when individuals submit their will to God, they no longer need the heavy hand of tyranny. Self-control through Christ is what makes freedom possible. That’s why the restoration of this Republic must begin with the restoration of individual obedience to God.

The Flesh Must Be Crucified, Not Coddled. Galatians 5:24 says, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” That’s the charge. Not to tame the flesh. Not to excuse it. But to crucify it. That means we confront our selfishness, pride, lust, and laziness head-on. We repent. We obey. We walk in the Spirit. And we teach our children to do the same. Because unless we do, we will hand over to the next generation a land of bondage, not blessing.

Self-Government Begins with Self-Sacrifice. There is no such thing as national liberty without personal liberty from sin. If we want a culture that honors life, marriage, faith, and freedom, it must be built by people who are willing to lay down their will. That’s what true self-governance requires, not simply casting out external enemies, but dying to internal rebellion. This isn’t about blaming the devil for our sin. This is about taking responsibility and surrendering our hearts to God.

A Call to Christ and to Courageous Obedience. You cannot be truly free until you are first free from sin. And that freedom is only found in Jesus Christ. As John 3:16 declares, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Christ died not only to save us from hell, but to make us right with God, and to adopt us as His sons and daughters. He doesn’t just rescue us from judgment; He restores our relationship with the Father, gives us a new identity, and calls us to live in the freedom of that redemption.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). And He followed with this promise: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). This is not freedom to do as we please. It is freedom to live as we were created to live, in righteousness, in truth, in fellowship with God.

If you’re tired of defeat, if you’re worn out by guilt, if you’re ready to be made new, don’t just pray for relief, repent and believe the Gospel. Turn from your sin. Turn to Christ. Lay down your pride. Lay down your rebellion. Lay down your excuses.

Come to the cross. Come to Christ. And then, take up your cross daily. Walk in obedience. Walk in liberty. Because those who are free in Christ are the freest of all.

That's the powerful truth, Chaz. Only Jesus can give us true freedom. And when He sets us free we are free indeed. But you are exactly right, freedom in Christ is 180° opposite of what the world believes. The world teaches we should be able to live life without any rules or laws, but that's nothing but anarchy. Throughout the Book of Judges we read that the people did what was right in their own eyes. What was the result? The people of Israel were brought into bondage. They only found genuine freedom when they humbled themselves before God and submitted to His Word.

And Chaz, may the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, go before you and open doors that…
